CBD has been touted as a remedy from everything from epilepsy to chronic pain. With so much information out there, we’re here to help you separate fact from fiction.
The strongest evidence of CBD’s health benefits has been in the area of childhood epilepsy. Many of these syndromes do not respond to traditional anti-seizure medication but clinical studies have shown that CBD is able to reduce or even eliminate many of the associated seizures. In June 2018, the FDA approved the first ever drug containing CBD, Epidiolex, to combat these childhood epilepsy syndromes.
CBD is also known to exhibit anti-inflammatory properties. Preliminary studies have shown that CBD used on the skin may help reduce inflammatory and lower pain associated with arthritis. While more studies are needed, interest in CBD-based treatments for chronic pain has expanded due to CBD’s low risk of dependency as compared to alternatives such as opioids. Even traditional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can cause bleeding and cardiovascular problems.
Research also suggests that CBD may be useful in fighting anxiety and panic attacks. Again, while further research is necessary and every person reacts to CBD different, sufferers of anxiety may benefit from trying CBD at low doses first to gauge effectiveness.
